Farmer’s Note — Week 13

Butternut Winter Squash-1 The first of the Winter Squash.  Just delicious.
Summer Squash-1 pound
Broccoli-4 heads-wow, what a harvest. The broccoli this season is just spectacular. Peter worked tirelessly during the drought to keep the transplants watered and growing. It has really paid off.  Too much broccoli for one week?  Just steam and pop the extra in a zip lock bag and into the freezer. It will be delicious this winter.
Basil-1 bunch-The second planting is now ready for harvest.

Peaches-this is the end of the Peaches. At the end of the season they may be better for cooking. Peaches also make a great sauce and can easily be frozen.

Farmer’s Note — Week 11

This week’s full share is:
Tomatoes-4 pounds-a variety of tomatoes. This is the week for the major tomato harvest.  Some are large and red, some smaller and will have a yellow top that will stay that way, some that are paste tomatoes.  We pick them and mix them.

Cluster Tomatoes – 1 basket  A small, red cherry type tomato.

Potatoes-1 pound. These are a red potato that we tried as a trial this season so the quantity is limited.  They are small but delicious.  Do not peel.  The skins are so tender that they should be left on.

Vanear Plums-1 bag  A yellow flesh plum with a beautiful outer skin.  Good for fresh eating.
Donut Peaches-1 bag This is the last of the Donuts. The orchard saved all they had for the CSA shares. What a treat.

Boothby Blonde Cucumbers-2  A sweet short, chunky heirloom cucumber.  The seeds are always large but the cucumber is very crunchy.

Opal Basil-1 bunch A beautiful purple basil.  Infused in a mild, white vinegar, the color and flavor are spectacular.

FRUIT SHARE
Peaches-1 bag The peaches have a bit of hail damage.  The Fix Brothers have lost a good portion of their fruit harvest this season but were able to pick this delivery of peaches.  Farming is not for the faint of heart or spirit.

Donut Peaches-1 box  A favorite.  Flattened little peaches that look like a donut.  So sweet.

Summer Squash-1 pound.  The heat and dry conditions have really put a strain on the summer squash and production has slowed dramatically.

Lemon Basil-1 bunch  A fragrant, lemon scented, small leaf basil.  The small leaved specialty basil varieties all flower very early.  Pick off the flower heads and eat if you would like or use as a garnish. The leaves can be used as you would green basil but with a lemony twist.

Boothbly Blonde/Poona Kheera Cucumber — 2.
Both are heirloom varieties mixed in the crate. They are hard for us to separate so just take two total. The Boothby are yellow and the Poona Kheera Cucumber can be any color from brown to yellow. Boothby were from Maine and the Poona Kheera Cucumber are from India. Both are delicious.
